GAIA WINES. FERMENTED WITH THE ENERGY OF THE MOST GIFTED LAND

With the sign of Ammonite.

The fossil of the Aegean Sea – whispering the ancient secrets of the Greek land has been getting around the world the most famous Greek varieties the last years using the name GAIA wines. This was accomplished, with the education and the passion of its people.

GAIA Wines was founded in 1994 by Yiannis Paraskevopoulos (Agriculturalist and PhD in Enology from the University of Bordeaux II) and Leon Karatsalos (Agriculturalist).

Both of them are the ideal examples of the Greek mindset of traveling and gaining knowledge and experience – characteristics transmitted  to the production of their wines- aiming to offer to all the wine lovers worldwide, the best possible result in their own way:

“Our basic option was to install our wineries in the two most important wine-growing regions of Greece, Santorini and Nemea, and to produce competitive wines of high quality standards.” – Yiannis Paraskevopoulos

“We expected people reading the labels of Gaia Wines to understand this provocative idea which was our driving force, and always remains the same: to explore in depth the boundaries of the Greek varieties, making them well -known all over the world.” – Leon Karatsalos

HISTORY

Introduction of ‘THALASSITIS’

1994

The company came out with 9,600 bottles of a Santorini P.D.O White Wine with the name Thalassitis, which challenged the established standards for the dry white wines, something that was welcomed with enthusiasm by the wine –lovers. As a result, Thalassitis conquered a position among the new qualitative Greek labels.

Introduction of NOTIOS White

1996

This wine is a member of the ``NOTIOS`` series, which was created through our will to explore the rest aspects of the Peloponnesian vineyard. NOTIOS White comes from a blend vinification of Moschofilero, variety originated from the Arcadian plateau, of Roditis, variety from the hills of Corinthia and of the well-known Assyrtiko variety.

Introduction of NOTIOS Red

1996

The next member of the series is Notios Red, coming from the vinification of Agiorgitiko originated from the semi-mountainous Koutsi commune of Nemea and of Syrah, an international variety.

New private vineyard in Nemea

1997

A 7 hectare private vineyard in Koutsi commune of Nemea and a new well-equipped winery, with a capacity of 3,000 hectoliters.

GAIA ESTATE

1997

GAIA ESTATE, a red wine Nemea P.D.O which challenges the previously prevailing perception for Agiorgitiko not being able to give long-aged wines.

AGIORGITIKO 14-18h

1997

A ``heretic`` rosé wine made from Agiorgitiko coming from the semi-mountainous communes of Asprokambos and Clementi of Nemea. A rosé wine seeking white codes of conduct.

RITINITIS NOBILIS

1997

With RITINITIS NOBILIS we tried to redefine Retsina's quality and flavor. The result is a cool wine that marvelously balances between grapes and pine trees.

Introduction of THALASSITIS OAK FERMENTED

1999

THALASSITIS OAK FERMENTED is a Santorini P.D.O wine, with an extremely limited number of bottles.

AGIORGITIKO BY GAIA & ANATOLIKOS

2001

The middle bond in the series of Agiorgitiko, which showed up to cover a tasting discontinuity. AGIORGITIKO by GAIA could be described as typical Nemea wine. ANATOLIKOS, a sweet red wine from Agiorgitiko! This wine’s production is influenced by the long tradition and history of Nemea, coming from the carefully selected grapes of Agiorgitiko, when leaving them dry under the mild sun of the Greek autumn aiming at their slow dehydration.

GAIA S

2006

More recently, willing to complete our «adventure» with the Agiorgitiko variety, we decided to combine it with a foreign variety. The charismatic Syrah, which is cultivated in Koutsi, participates at around 30% in this rich and mature blend. This wine was named «GAIA S» and we like to believe it augurs the dawn of a new era in Nemea winemaking.

ASSYRTIKO BY GAIA- WILD FERMENT

2008

Lately, in 2008 an unconventional wine sprang to life in our Santorini winery, the Assyrtiko by GAIA - WILD FERMENT. These matured and high quality grapes of Assyrtiko are delicately selected and come exclusively from the mountainous Pyrgos vineyard, a fact that ensures wines with a more aromatic character than in the rest of the island. This remarkably different taste profile of Assyrtiko, presented a new version of Santorini wines which fast became best seller in European markets.

SUBMERGING THALASSITIS

2009

This year, 450 sea bottles getting rid of the light and the oxygen were submerged in Santorini in order to age, but also willing to explore the strength of this variety.

VINSANTO by GAIA

2012

After 10 years aging in oak barrels, VINSANTO by Gaia a natural sweet wine produced in Santorini, came out in the market.

Emergence of THALASSITIS

2014

Unfortunately, from the 2009 harvest only 3 bottles of submerged THALASSITIS were rescued, but the result was impressive. An exceptionally aged wine without any oxidation ranging between a new and a very sophisticated product. Since then, this ritual has been repeated symbolizing GAIA WINES 'innovation and constant research. In 2010, 258 bottles were emerged. And we go on...

MONOGRAPH MOSCHOFILERO, MONOGRAPH ASSYRTIKO, MONOGRAPH AGIORGITIKO

2015

The MONOGRAPH family brings to wine-lovers a more approachable and friendly side of some of the most exquisite varieties of the Greek and the Mediterranean South.

4-6h AGIORGITIKO

2016

The 4-6h came to complete, with its ‘big brother’ 14-18h, the rosé exploration we started some years ago.

WITH POWER ... BY THE GAIA WINES GROUP

By its nature, wine is the result of many people's labor and its enjoyment requires also a will of sharing the soul. Wine is also the result of the vigor of its team. This power is the people of GAIA WINES. And they are its greater advantage. This wonderful adventure started thanks to the passion of two people and thanks to their professionalism, discipline, stubbornness and the sense of teamwork-of all people sharing the same vision and passion for wine – this journey is excitingly accepted and continues successfully.

Recent News: Thalassitis Submerged 2014!

In 2009, we started a process of aging wine in the Sea of Santorini. Everything started as an experiment to see how wine behaved under totally different maturation conditions. We age Thalassitis in conditions of constant temperature, away from light and oxidation-but the weather is not always favorable. Of the previous vintages only few bottles have survived.

But the big ideas are not scared by the storms! After a continuous improvement of the process, this year we have almost fully emerged the 2014 vintage with great success.

The result of its 4-year stay in the under watercellar is impressive. The taste of Thalassitis has softened ideally by transforming into a sophisticated wine, while its color still preserves the illusion of youth.

A rare “hybrid” wine that blends between the new and sophisticated character.

Straight from the Sea.

AGIORGITIKO 14-18H

Deep rose color. Fruity aroma which is dominated by the flavors of cherry and gooseberry- both of which are typical of the Agiorgitiko grapes that grow on these highlands-and lastly, a cool refreshing taste.

2017

AGIORGITIKO 4-6H

Rosés are back. Some lighter and fresher, some darker and richer. Our Agiorgitiko 4-6h came to complement the ‘‘rosé quest’’ that GAIA started years ago, with its big brother 14-18h. Agiorgitiko grapes from a particularly high altitude give a lovely rosé color a profound freshness of aroma and flavor.
